Southampton Church Ruins

Some Ruins of church in Southampton.

I include this because it brings back memories of the only time I felt unsafe in this entire trip to the UK. I wandered into these ruins to take some more pictures. While I was looking for a shot, a group of people came in and started beating up one of their number - punching him, kicking him after he fell. The sense I got was that the poor gentleman owned them some money and they were extracting their pound of flesh. And there I was with a camera. Fortunately, they ignored me, and after they left I slipped out. Never did take any more pictures though.

Southampton

Once we finally left the farm, we drove (on the left side) from Bristol to Southampton. Along the way we stopped at the Imperial Tank Museum; but that will be a different Album (although, perhaps, I should have included the picture of the "tank crossing" street sign here).

Southampton overall was a disappointment. We did see a couple of places; but nothing special. The building here is an old gate house.

Many of the windows in the Abbey are clear (not stained), making it one of the brightest interiors of any of the ancient churches in the UK

A olonger view of the ceiling, so you can see how thin the columns are the support the roof. The advantage of fan vaulting was that you could have much larger windows.

Bath Abbey is recognized as one of the best examples of the technique known as "fan vaulting" (for obvious reasons)
